This is the story of the arrival of Oromë and Ludmila in the Dauriath, the new elven world. (The beginning of this story is here)

We remember that they left the Nyidiath well before the deportation treaty was signed. They found in the Dauriath a small colony of Elves, already living in the wild into difficult conditions. The Dauriath was a strange place. In facts, it was formerly a bleak planet, resembling our Moon, which received air and water only recently. So it was populated only with plants, some insects and many birds, but no large animals. The newly arrived Elves were just exploring this new world, knowing that the ocean was rising and it would drown many places before settling to a stable level.

For the very first villages, they had to find suitable places, build simple log houses, and start the first cultivations. In these very early times, the Dauriath was looking like the Far West. But it was a very different mind: Elves are poets and artists, who took more care for bringing books and music instruments than tools. Tools they could forge them anyway.

So they had simple houses, but from the beginning they avoided square forms, preferring by far rounded houses, or fancy forms, thatch roofs, flagstone paths (irregular flagstones, as they had no tools for cutting stone), among trees and flowered bushes. These houses were not able to withstand tens of years, they were just emergency houses. But they allowed them to do other tasks, such as cultivation, forging tools, building sawmills, exploring, etc. With a bit more time, they were able to build better houses, sculpted wooden carved houses, that they called violin houses.

Only much later they would get paint, glass and tiles. So, for more than one century they had to do with wooden thatched houses. At best they used waxed fabric under the thatch, so that the roofs could last longer without the need for constant repair.

But the first Elves who knew these times are now longing at them, because everything was so new, wild and untamed, but also, so gentle and so beautiful...

Nearby everywhere in the Dauriath, the ground was of regolith, a hard mixture of fine sand, gravel, stones and rocks of every sizes and types. So it was difficult to establish fields, they had to remove stones at hand, and even sift the sand. But once this done, the soil was so good, plants were growing very well, so that they had plenty of crop, with only little work. The stones removed from the soil were used to make banks, paths and rock gardens. A common feature in the Dauriath is garden rows at about one metre above the alleys, so that one can work without having to lean or squat.

In the evening they gathered into larger houses, to sing and dance together, and to recall stories of their ancient lost world, the Nyidiath. They were chased by the Humans, their marvellous wooden houses burned, and their wonderful magical forests sacrificed to logging and mining. So they wanted to do something still more beautiful, now that they were free and safe from any danger.

Centuries before the exodus, they had sent animals to the Dauriath, hoping they could thrive here. And they did! No large animals, no mouses or rats, but many kinds of beautiful animals like squirrels and birds, and also does, and ants, butterflies, dragonflies, golden coloured beetles, and many others.

Birds found themselves their way to the Dauriath, millennia before the Elves did. Especially migratory birds, who could regularly travel from a world to another, with flying at very hight altitude, more than 400 kilometres (This was possible around the Horiathon, where the atmosphere was very thick)

Oromë was a former human, who became an Elf while marrying to Ludmila, a born Elve with great magic healing powers. Their strange and moving story is told in the story «Midsummer love». They arrived in the Dauriath among the first thousands of settlers, secretly sent by the other Elves, in preparation for the unavoidable deportation of all the other Elves.

They not yet had children at this time, although they did later. But for now their purpose was to set a nice place, and cultivate for the millions ones to arrive. They choose a slope with plenty of rocks, unsuitable for farming, for building their houses. It was easy to build terraces with dry stones walls, and set stone and log houses. Oromê and Ludmila installed their here, on a terrace, leaning against the wall of an upper terrace, so that they could access the attic from here.

Ludmila much loved flowers, and she cultivated many on the terraces, together with spices and herbal teas. They were not isolated, they had companions in other houses nearby. At the bottom of the slope were fields, where most Elves were farming. They did not cut all the trees to set fields, just building cairns with the stones, around the largest trees. So these trees were shadowing parts of the fields, and they planted different seeds in different places, depending if they needed shadow or sun. The cairns received flowers, spices and herbal teas, and even later, dyes.

So their place was soon very beautiful, despite the very few technical means they had.

This elven community had a larger house, with fabrics to cover the clay walls. They gathered here, spending time to kitchen, tell stories and sing.

On the top of the slope, Oromë built a small astronomy workshop, where he spend years polishing a mirror for a telescope. This was very important to their eyes, not only because they had to catch up human science and techniques, but also because they had to give a profound sense to their lives. This requires to look at the universe...

The ocean was still rising, but much slower now. It started to fill a valley nearby, drowning thousands of trees. The Elves tried to cut as much as they could, but it was impossible to store so much wood. But soon they had a new sea, and they could join several villages with boat travels. This much simplified their lives, as they could transport crops, iron and tools. So they began to set wooden jetties and harbours. They had to build new ships, as the bad smelling and unsightly boats they used to come into the Dauriath were long ago cut into shingles. Their tarred wood was very good for this purpose, but not much at anything else.

Ludmila and Oromë's village had a view on their new sea. It was peaceful and blue, how to imagine the tremendous and relentless cosmic forces which formed it?

Little by little, the Elves enlarged their places, to accommodate the millions who would arrive later with the exodus. They extended their fields, saving huge piles of seeds and grains into caves. They baked tiles for the roofs (bricks came only much later), so that the look of their villages changed slowly.

When the exodus was completed, they needed to expand their population, in order to match the human world. So Oromë and Ludmila had children, one every five years. They wanted to be sure they would have something to eat, and friends to share their games, with other children in the village. They soon had a children house, on the top of the slope.

Oromë rebuilt another observatory higher in the mountains, together with some friends he met in the same time than Ludmila, like Alanar. They started to design instruments like the gnomon, to know the trajectory of the planets. They understood before the Humans did, that they were rotating around their sun. But this is not a simple thing to grasp, when we have only the starry sky and wooden instruments to find it!

This small group also did more immediately useful things, such as forging iron tools, or bettering steel. Fortunately they had no more need to build weapons, but many better tools were needed, to cut the stone, sculpt the wood, and many other things. Later Alanar and others had the idea to use the force of steam, a forbidden thing on the Nyidiath. But this is another story.

They were already very happy with what they had. But still, one of their main researches was for paints and dyes. They tried thousands of plants and explored for minerals. Little by little they build better houses, tiles replacing thatch (Although many preferred the look of thatch, and are still putting it above the tiles)

They built large common houses, where to sing and tell stories of their ancient lost world to their children.

Still later, their children grown up, Oromë and Ludmila started travelling around their new world, in order to exchange knowledge, seeds and skills. This was a wonderful time, which saw much improvements to their precarious lives. Spices, dyes or paints discovered into some places could spread all around their world. Tired of whitish or brownish clothes, they could wear nice colours, or prepare glazed plates, and so many of these objects we use daily, without realizing that they all need to be manufactured, each in a different workshop.

The Elves started to paint their houses, and add stained glass. Soon nearby all windows were coloured, and it is still a very common custom today throughout the Dauriath. New vegetables and spices were spreading, together with flowers and coloured ceramic dishes, brand new stories and novels were told, and their lives became really nice.

The original settlers, thought, were keeping saying that in their ancient world, the Nyidiath, the forests and mountains were much more moving and mysterious, with millennia of history and much more past evolution. They had a life of their own, and a magic that no place in the Dauriath could match. They said that centuries of tender care of nature would be needed to match their ancient world. But new born children were already saying that their own forests and mountains had emotion, mystery and magic... so...

The new born Elves were now creating new stories and lore of their own, which had no root into the ancient world, to the contrary of their parent's dreams and regrets.

At times, however, they received some news of their ancient world. The Nyidiath was now occupied nearby only by Humans. Some of them were still turning Elves, and they were still undertaking the great lap from the Nyidiath to the Dauriath, through the dreadful and dangerous Horiathon pass. In doing so, they could bring detailed news and reports on how the Human world was evolving. The Elves could also send back messages with large catapults on ships, which could throw projectiles hundreds of kilometres away, from the low gravitation in this place.

News of the ancient world were not all good. There were still wars... Human had chased the Elves they hated, but they had not chased their hatred... and they could no longer blame the Elves! So things changed only little, just getting more confusing.

But there were progress however in many domains. Especially, many humans were now regretting to have chased the Elves away, saying that they had lost much with this. So now both parties were looking ahead, at the time when the two worlds would be linked permanently. But it was still centuries ahead, as the Horiathon pass was still a one way trip.

But when the Horiathon will be open in both ways, Elves will have to return, and bring back marvel, merriness and hope into the Human world. More and more Humans were turning elvish, and joining them, or starting some better places into the Human world itself.

So, rather than blocking or bullying the Elves with repression and other childish things, people on the contrary needed them, their inspiration, their ideas, their hopes and vibrations...

Oromë met his Elve into strange conditions, which are told into the story «Midsummer love». He was an human and could never imagine he could become an Elf... But this happened, even if he did not wished it and tried to avoid it. And he was to become a great astronomer among the Elves, and an expert for the Elders in this matter.

Later he was to become a negotiator, when the contact with the Humans would be restored. Much later he will become an Elder himself, with greater magical powers and much knowledge. He and Ludmila would live three or four thousands years, before disappearing to the eyes of the other Elves. At this time the Humans and the Elves would be merging, not toward an average, but toward the best the Elves have to offer.

As in these stories, Humans with enough good heart are granted magic, and in this way they become Elves. People with little heart of bad heart just remain Humans.

Well, in some way this is also true here on Earth... at least it is good to think this way.
